Swedish National Hip Arthroplasty Register

The Swedish National Hip Arthroplasty Register was initiated in 1979 and is based on voluntary cooperation by all clinics and hospitals. The primary purpose of the registry is to generate information to the individual unit, where it can be utilised to improve the medical treatment. The value of the registry is greatest when the aim is to answer questions requiring large patient materials e.g. complications.

The goals of this registry are to define the epidemiology of total hip replacement in the Swedish population as a whole and to identify risk factors for poor outcomes that relate to patient characteristics, the implant and the procedure. Results from the registry are valuable instruments for refining indications for surgery, defining reasons for differences in procedure rates, developing surgical techniques and to document results with new materials and prosthetic designs. Serious clinical failures can early be identified and risk factors leading to accelerated prosthetic failure.
