Tibial spine fracture

TIBIAL SPINE FRACTURES

Common in 8-14 years

Anterior tibial spine is the distal attachment of ACL

Tibial spine is cartilaginous in children

Offers less resistance than the ligament

Tensile stress leads to failure through the cancellous boneunder the tibial spine

Posterior tibial spine injuries are rare and occurs inskeletally mature

Mechanism of injury

Hyperextension with some rotation

Fall from a bicycle and football are the commonest causes

Classification

Meyers and McKeever

Type I                                     Minimallydisplaced. Mild anterior elevation
