Arthrodesis1. Please explain the difference between arthrodesis and ankylosis? Arthrodesis is the result of a surgical procedure whilst ankylosis is the result of a pathological process 2. What joints are best suited to arthrodesis and could you give some examples. Best for joints that are painful and unstable where stiffness does not seriously affect function. Eg. Spine, ankle, tarsus, wrist and ipjs. 3. What are the principles of arthrodesis? Both joint surfaces are denude of cartilage, they are held apposed in optimum position by internal or external fixation, brome graft is added in larger joints to promote osseous bridging, the limb is splinted until union is complete. Good fixation and compression reduces the risk of pseudarthrosis. This is a preview of the site content. To view the full text for this site, you need to log in.
